11 Teams Still in Running to Enter MotoGP in 2012 Season

The International Motorcycling Federation announced 11 teams have passed the latest round of applications for the 2012 MotoGP season.

MotoGP promoter Dorna and the International Road Racing Teams Association selected 11 new teams representing 16 riders to continue with the application process for the 2012 season. Applicants submitted detailed plans for participation to the IRTA by May 14. The FIM announced in April that 14 teams and 21 riders had passed the previous step but the list was whittled down to 13 teams after the May 13-15 Le Mans round.

The 11 remaining teams will have until June 3 to provide a security deposit with the IRTA. Dorna and the IRTA will then decide during the June 3-5 Catalunya Grand Prix which teams will be offered a contract to race in the 2012 season. Teams wishing to participate as Claiming Rule Teams will also have to receive approval from the Grand Prix Commission. While there?s no guarantee all 11 remaining teams will pass this final step, the MotoGP grid will be a lot larger than its current 17-rider lineup.

The FIM did not announce which teams had made it past the recent round of cuts, though it is believed that Norton had applied for a team with two riders. Following the Catalunya grand Prix, the FIM will release the names of the teams invited to join the existing teams for the 2012 MotoGP season.

Photo of the Week: It?s Not Easy Being Max Biaggi

With World Superbike coming to Miller Motorsports Park next weekend, many eyes are on reigning champ Max Biaggi. Will Max be able to recover from a rocky season?s start to keep the title in Aprilia?s trophy case? Or will a charging Carlos Checa and upstart Marco Melandri continue to show no respect for Max?s greatness? Since his early days as a fantastic 250cc two-stroke rider, Max has had his share of disrespectful rivals. Last year ...

Pedrosa Has Plate Inserted In Collarbone, Still Uncertain For Barcelona

Dani Pedrosa has finally made a decision. After two days in hospital mulling over the best course of action, Pedrosa has finally decided to have surgery to have a titanium plate fitted to fix his right collarbone, just a month after having surgery to have the plate in his left collarbone removed.

Pedrosa faced two options: do nothing, and treat the collarbone by immobilization, hoping it would heal naturally, and face a recovery period of at least a month. Alternatively, he could have a plate fitted, with a very good chance he would be fit to take part in the next MotoGP at the Barcelona track in Montmelo.

Under normal circumstances, the choice is very quickly made: surgery is the fastest way to return to racing. However, Pedrosa's last experience with surgery was horrendous, leaving the Spaniard with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, the plate partially obstructing the main artery supplying blood to his left arm. Pedrosa was hugely relieved to have that plate removed, and having a new one fitted will be a mental strain.

Trakrok Concept by Alexei Mikhailov

Well maybe it’s not strictly a motorcycle, but Alexei Mikhailov’s Trakrok concept certainly look like a lot of fun. Part quad, part snowmobile, part dirt bike, we imagine the Trakrok would be able to get us into all sorts of trouble on some of the more impassable terrain available. Featuring futuristic off-road tires up front, the real thing that catches our eye with the Trakrok is the rubber snowmobile-like independent track that replaces the rear tires. ...

Rea and Toseland inaugurate new Silverstone Wing

0151Two current World Superbike stars of the calibre of Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) and James Toseland (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team) yesterday took part in the official inauguration of the “Silverstone Wing”, the new pitlane structure that will help to change the face of the historic British circuit.

Measuring 390 metres in length, the Silverstone Wing includes a totally new pit-lane area (41 new garages and a surface area covering 6,200 square metres), spectator and hospitality zones, a 2,780 square metre Media Centre and a new race control tower.

The striking pit and paddock design is another important stepping stone in the redevelopment of Silverstone into Britain’s premier racing circuit.

The Silverstone Wing was given the seal of approval by Jonathan Rea and James Toseland amongst other famous figures from the worlds of two and four wheels, and will be fully operational in time for the FIM Superbike World Championship round on 29-31 July.

Casey Stoner makes Honda 1000cc debut

Casey Stoner kicked off his preparations for the 2012 MotoGP world championship in Jerez yesterday (Tuesday) when he completed his first day of testing on board Honda?s new 1000cc machine.

Fresh from his emphatic victory in the French Grand Prix at Le Mans on Sunday, Stoner completed 50 laps on the new bike, which was given its shakedown test at the Suzuka circuit in Japan last month by Shinichi Ito and Kousuke Akiyoshi.

The Aussie declared his debut a success and said: “Everything has gone very well, very positive. It’s just nice to ride the 1000cc again, to feel the engine and the power. I had a lot of fun, I enjoyed it because everything we’ve tried seems to be working, so no complaints. We didn’t focus on anything special, just tried to understand what the bike is doing, how it reacts on the brakes and things like that, also considering some the issues we have with the 800cc right now.

“The braking point seems to be stronger, stability in the front going into the corner seems to be very good, and of course we want to understand how the power delivery is, and it is very smooth so no problem. In general, we haven’t changed too much from the set up we have on the 800cc right now and the feeling is very similar, so it’s pretty good.”

Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa was also scheduled to test the new 1000cc four-cylinder machine but was ruled out after breaking his right collarbone in a controversial incident with Marco Simoncelli in Le Mans.

And Stoner said his absence was a big blow for Honda with the Spaniard?s input being vital for the development of the new project.

The 2007 world champion added: “The biggest disappointment is that Dani is not going be here to test as he is important to the development of this bike. I hope that soon HRC can get his input as well because we need as much data as possible, in order to be ready for next season.”
